Tursini: Southeastern trends

Editor’s note: Jamie Tursini has been crushing the casinos so far this season with an impressive 28-14 (67%) mark. Dime players have pushed their bankroll to $12,600 on the season. Don’t miss out on Saturday’s selections or better yet, hop on board in his discounted season package ($299).

The Southeastern Conference is the best and most popular conference in the country. Has it been profitable for sports bettors the last two seasons?

In 2004, the Eastern Division featured only one school that posted a winning record against the spread. The Florida Gators went 7-4 versus the number. The other five schools went a combined 23-31 (43%) against the spread. Of course they all beat up on each other, but when picking a team or two to fade the entire season, you’re asking for it!

The Western Division faired better. Alabama 6-4, Arkansas 6-5, and Auburn 6-4, all helped bettors cash tickets in 2004. While LSU, Mississippi, and Mississippi St. combined for a 14-17 (45%) record against the number.

Thus far in 2005 we see much of the same. The East has ONLY one team making a profit for bettors. Vanderbilt is 3-2 (60%) ATS, while clubs like Florida 2-3-1, Georgia 3-3, and Tennessee 1-4 all are costing players one way or another.

Over in the West, two clubs are fairing well. Auburn and LSU are both 3-1 (75%) against the spread. The others, Alabama 2-3, Arkansas 2-2, Mississippi 2-2, and Mississippi St. 2-2 aren’t necessarily breaking anyone’s bankroll, but are losing money nevertheless.

As we head into the stretch run for this college football season. It’s very important to not get all caught up into this heavily hyped conference. These teams are going to be laying more points than they should most of the time because of the attention this conference gets.

Even when they face each other you need to be careful not to fall into the trap of making a wager just because it’s the ESPN game of the week. Bet smart, and keep a sharp eye out on VALUE!

That’s where the money is.
