Which one do you want to talk about? Football? They just held their induction ceremony this past weekend. Then of course, there's the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Basketball Hall of Fame, the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and about 60 more that cover everything from fishing to fencing.
Every year, tens of millions of people visit Cooperstown, Canton, Canastota ( I'm pretty sure that's where the Boxing Hall of Fame is) and dozens of other cities with their kids so that they can see Mickey's bat, or Willie's glove or Wayne's stick. Tens of millions are spent during these trips on memorabilia. I say it's all good.
But.....................Where's the doctor's Hall of Fame? You know, the men and women who save our lives. Where's the Teacher's Hall of Fame? Those dedicated professionals who taught us how to read and write. Then there are the police, fire fighters, and last but not least, our military. I'm thinking they should have a Hall of Fame, with the proceeds going back to support their efforts.
It's a little disturbing, at least to me, that kids can tell you who’s leading the league in hitting, homers and RBIs without flinching. They know how to twitter Shaq and A-Rod. But if their lives depended on it, they couldn't sniff Jonas Salk's stats…like the cure for polio. I'll say it again. I.....love......sports. But it's only part of the picture.
