At the Gate - Sunday
October 25, 2009
By Mike Dempsey VegasInsider.com
I t is closing day at Belmont Park today, and we go out on a bang with a good betting card that features six stakes races.
Four are overnight stakes to go along with the $150,000 Mohawk and the $150,000 Ticonderoga, which were originally scheduled for Saturday but pushed back to today because of the weather.
Thanks to a couple of longshots coming in at Keeneland including Satans Quick Chick ($48.80) in the Raven Run Stakes (G2), there is a $254,602 Pick 6 carryover for Sunday.
If you did not get a chance to see Saturday’s Frank J. DeFrancis Dash (G1) at Laurel Park, you might want to check out the replay.
Vineyard Haven was the 4/5 favorite, and looked hopelessly beaten in midstretch, looking like he was not handling the sloppy surface.
Had their been in race wagering, I would have bet the house he would not only not finish first, he looked like he was going to land out of the money.
Jockey Alan Garcia got him down toward the inside, away from getting the mud splashing in his face, and he found another gear, going on to overtake Ravalo and prevail by a half length in an amazing effort.
The weather looks great and there are plenty of playable races between Keeneland and Belmont Park today.
With Belmont Park closing today, we move on to Aqueduct on Wednesday.

Here is today's opening race from Keeneland to get our day off to a good start:
KEE Race 1 Md $50,000 (1:05 ET) #8 Cool Clue 12/1 #4 Jilly From Philly 9/5 #7 Round About 7/2 #2 Mr. Realistic 5/2
Analysis: #8 Cool Clue was beaten double digit lengths in both of his starts at Arlington but now drops in for a tag, takes the blinkers off and will try two turns for the first time. The gelding did show some early interest before weakening last out and his pedigree leans more toward a route being the best distance. He is by Include out of a Slew City Slew mare, her first foal to race. The gelding figures to be a decent price in this spot and could be ready for a good effort here in his third career outing.
#4 Jilly From Philly was off poorly and made a mild late run to finish third last out over the poly at Arlington. The runner up Corredor Dela Isla came back to graduate in his next outing on Sept. 13 against maiden special weight company. This colt has been in the mix in all four of his starts and in his last two did not see much pace in front of him. I like the jock switch here to Albarado and the Robertson barn got off to a good start here, winning with his first four starters.
Wagering WIN: #8 to win at 6/1 or better. EX: 4,8 / 2,4,7,8 TRI: 4,8 / 2,4,7,8 / 1,2,4,7,8
Today's Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:
BEL Race 8 Wings of Jove S. (4:38 ET) #3 Female Drama 5/2 #7 Simply Spiteful 7/2 #6 Romantic Hideaway 8/1 #1 Magic Appeal 5/1
Analysis: #3 Female Drama went gate to wire to break her maiden in her debut and did it over a main track that was playing to horse traveling in the outer paths that day. The filly caught the slop in that outing. She has four sibs that are winners including one stakes winner.
#7 Simply Spiteful was a good looking winner at Del park in her third career start, drawing clear to win by 7 3/4 lengths. The runner up in the race was Imaginary Saint, who came back to graduate in her next outing on Oct. 14 by 6 1/2 lengths. She won last out with something left in the tank and looks capable of moving forward off her last outing.
Wagering WIN: #3 to win at 2/1 or better. EX: 3,7 / 1,3,6,7 TRI: 3,7 / 1,3,6,7 / 1,3,5,6,7
Today's Featured Race of the Day from Keeneland:
KEE Race 8 Dowager S. (4:42 ET) #1 Winter View 4/1 #2 Caprice 8/1 #11 Black Mamba 8/5 #7 Lemonette 4/1
Analysis: #1 Winter View came with a good late run to finish in the runner up spot last out, beaten a half length for the top spot behind #5 Ballynoe. She did not get much early pace to run at in that effort and returns to Keeneland where she has done some of her best running. She won the Bewitch (G3) here at the spring meeting and followed that up with a win in the All Along (G3) at Colonial. She has landed in the exacta in all three trips at today's distance and looks primed for a good effort here in her second start off a two month break.
#2 Caprice is coming off a fourth place finish in the Glen Falls (G3), beaten 2 1/2 lengths for the top spot. The winner of the race was Mushka, who came back to win the Spinster (G1) here thanks to a DQ. She has a pair of wins at the distance and her 8/1 ML looks fair enough to toss her in the mix here.
Wagering WIN: #1 to win at 3/1 or better. EX: 1,2 / 1,2,7,11 TRI: 1,2 / 1,2,7,11 / 1,2,3,7,9,11
Live Longshots: These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
