Week 14 Opening Odds
December 4, 2017
Once we clear Thanksgiving, the calendar turns to the business month of the year in the NFL. For a dozen or so teams, it's already onto 2018. But for the rest, a good month of December can erase an entire season's worth of disappointment while a poor month of December can unravel three solid months of work prior to it.
Week 14 is a huge week for so many teams, particularly at the top of the NFC as there are three games that will have a huge impact on the chase for the conference's No. 1 seed.
Super in South Beach
Three weeks ago at BookMaker.eu, the Patriots were the biggest favorites of the season when they hosted the Dolphins. New England laid 17-points that day and came away a 35-17 victor to cover the spread.
Now, the Pats and Fins are getting together once again, and New England is now the biggest road favorite of the season at -12. The only time the Patriots were favored by more points at Miami was when they were on their tear to perfection in 2007. That season, the Brady Bunch was set at -15.5 against the Fins in South Beach.
Just remember that New England has been beaten SU in three of its last four visits to Miami.
A Chief Injustice
By default, someone is going to have to win the AFC West, and it's amazing that the Chiefs are still sitting in a tie for first place with the Raiders and Chargers with as bad as their form has been.
After starting the season at 5-0, Kansas City has lost five its last six games. It's not like Andy Reid's gang has been beaten by a bunch of powerhouses either. Losing to Pittsburgh at home and Oakland and Dallas on the road is one thing, but these last three losses to the Giants, Bills and Jets? Yuck.
Kansas City has been beaten SU as a favorite of at least four-points in three consecutive games, and it now has five defeats this year as the betting favorite, more than any other team in the NFL.
Saints' Scheduling Snafu
There's nothing cheap about the fact that the Saints are 9-3 this year. They're definitely one of the most-improved teams in the NFL, and their season sweep of a good team like Carolina gives them a lot of credence.
But let's not go and anoint the Saints as Super Bowl favorites quite yet.
New Orleans has only been an underdog in four games this year, and the team only has one win to show for its work in those games. The other eight games have all come as a betting favorite, and teams that are favorites should ultimately go on to win at least most of the time.
The Saints opened as underdogs this week at BookMaker.eu against a Falcons outfit that needs to win to keep any dying chances of winning the NFC South alive.
New Low for New York
The Giants are reportedly set to fire Ben McAdoo, a move that will have Big Blue fans standing and cheering, for a change.
Though losing is probably the best thing that could happen to New York, its fans aren't going to care about that when the Cowboys come to town in Week 14. The chance to bury Dallas is all that the Giants really have left to play for this year.
That said, the Cowboys have opened at -6, the most points they've been favored by in the Meadowlands since 1997 when they were 8.5-point chalk.
