Coach Props - N.Y. Giants
December 4, 2017
As Week 13 was set to kickoff on Sunday, reports surfaced that the New York Giants were set to fire Ben McAdoo as early as Monday. The hammer came down on Monday evening, and shortly thereafter, BookMaker.eu released betting lines on the next head coach of the team.
Mike Smith (+350) is the betting favorite to become the next coach of Big Blue.
Smith has had great success in the past both as a coordinator and as the head coach of the Falcons. He was considered the runner-up for the job when McAdoo was hired two years ago, and it only makes logical sense that he be given the top opportunity to coach for the Giants in 2018.
However, it should also be noted that the general manager who hired McAdoo, Jerry Reese, was fired as well. The next general manager is probably going to throw everything out that Reese left behind, and that could create an entirely new coaching search.
If New York does decide to go the coordinator route for its next coach, there are a few logical choices in Josh McDaniels (+400), Frank Reich (+550) and Teryl Austin (+550).
McDaniels was a disaster of a head coach with the Broncos, but it's been seven years since he was canned in Mile High. McDaniels returned to New England to coach under Bill Belichick once again. He arguably has the easiest job in football of being Tom Brady's offensive coordinator, but McDaniels certainly deserves a lot of the credit for helping evolve Brady into a Hall of Famer in the first place.
Though Reich hasn't directly come into contact with the Giants in his career, he's a native New Yorker who quarterbacked both the Bills and the Jets in his career. To have the ability to return to the Big Apple would be a dream for Reich, and after turning Carson Wentz into an MVP candidate this year as the offensive coordinator for the Eagles, he should be afforded the chance to at least interview for this position.
Austin has been considered a hot coaching commodity for a while now, but at 52 years old, he has never gotten the chance to lead his own team. This could be a decent first spot for him, but the hire would probably be looked upon poorly by the New York media.
Though BookMaker.eu forecasts the Giants ultimately hiring a coordinator, you can bet they'll bark up the tree of some of the huge names as well. Though Bill Cowher, David Shaw and Nick Saban are all tremendous longshots at 60 to 1 or higher, it wouldn't hurt to ask the question of them. Jon Gruden's (+2500) name is also linked to every big job in America, and this would certainly be as high profile as it gets.
The most logical choice for an experienced head coach would be Jim Harbaugh. At a price of 18 to 1, Harbaugh is the biggest favorite amongst current head coaches to leave his position and take the gig with the Giants. The former NFL Coach of the Year has been honing his craft at his alma mater at Michigan, but many are wondering if he's starting to wear out his welcome.
Could Harbaugh trade in his old Big Blue for a new version? It's certainly not out of the question.
